Prelude™

What is Prelude?

Prelude is a sealer/primer for wood surfaces that have been media blasted using corn or glass when a water based coating will be applied afterwards. Media blasting significantly increases the porosity of the wood, thus allowing it to absorb much more stain than those wood surfaces that have been chemically stripped, sanded, or pressure washed. This high absorption results in a darker final stain color. In addition, wood that is not uniform as a result of media blasting often emphasizes the differences in wood grain absorption. This can result in streaks and blotches due to varying amounts of stain absorbed by different areas of the wood.

Prelude solves many of the potential problems created by media blasting. One coat fills the pores of the wood and provides a uniform surface film in preparation for the application of a pigmented stain. Prelude is a sealer/primer which is designed for use in exterior and interior applications. It is not suitable as a final finish!

What are the Advantages of Using Prelude?

  • Reduces the porosity of media blasted wood surfaces
  • Prevents over-absorption of pigmented stain that results in darker than anticipated colors
  • Provides a uniform surface which helps to prevent blotches and streaks.
  • Contains UV Boost to prevent darkening of the wood by the UV rays.

What Coverage does Prelude Provide?

Prelude coverage varies depending on the porosity of the wood it is being applied to. Coverage will range between 200 and 400 SF per gallon and between 1000 and 2000 SF per five gallon pail

Where should Prelude be used?

Prelude should be used as a primer in the following situations.

  1. After a home is media blasted using corncob grit or New Age Glass Media.
  2. If a home has been aggressively pressure washed to the point where the surface is feathered and the porosity of the wood varies from area to area.
  3. When the surface of the wood has been unevenly sanded.
  4. On rough cut siding before the application of a color coat.
  5. If a section of a wall has been repaired or replaced and the new sections do not match the surface characteristics of the old.
  6. On older wood that has been cleaned of graying. Once cleaned, older wood typically takes on the porosity characteristics of a blasted surface.
  7. Whenever a clear coat is desired on Interior surfaces, Prelude is an ideal first coat for surfaces that are to be finished with Lifeline Acrylic Gloss or Satin.

What Finishes can be applied over Prelude?

Prelude is designed exclusively for use as a primer with water based Lifeline brand stains including Lifeline Ultra 2, Lifeline Exterior, and Lifeline Interior. Prelude should never be used as a primer for any oil or waterborne oil based finishes such as Woodguard, Sikkens Cetol Log and Siding or Nature’s Edge.

How do you apply Prelude?

Prelude may be applied with a brush or an airless sprayer. When applying with an airless sprayer always back brush the product into the wood. All surfaces where Prelude is being applied should be free of discoloration and contaminates including media grit, dirt, dust, grayed wood, as well as mold and mildew. Prelude should be applied when temperatures are between 40 and 90 degrees and out of direct sunlight. Any borate application using Shellguard RTU must be completed and allowed to dry for 1-3 days before applying Prelude.

Prelude cleanup is a snap with warm soapy water. To remove Prelude that has dried, soften the dried Prelude with alcohol or mineral spirits and wash with warm soapy water.
